Packing for a Red Rocks concert isn't like packing for a normal night out. You're attending an outdoor event at 6,450 feet elevation, in a venue where the weather can change three times during a single show, and where security will inspect every bag you carry.
The good news? Red Rocks is actually more permissive than most venues when it comes to bringing your own food, drinks, and comfort items. The bad news? They're strict about how you bring them, and there are some surprising items on the prohibited list (yes, they will confiscate your gum).
Here's exactly what to bring, what to leave behind, and how to pack it all.
What You CAN Bring to Red Rocks
The Essentials (Bring These Every Time)
🎟️ Your Ticket
Obvious, but critical. All tickets are digital through the AXS app. Have it loaded and ready before you arrive—cell service can be unreliable in the foothills. Screenshot your ticket as a backup.
💧 Empty Reusable Water Bottle
This is arguably the most important item on the list. At 6,450 feet, dehydration sneaks up fast—especially combined with physical activity, sun, and altitude.
- Must be 32 oz or less
- Must be empty when entering (you can bring it full to the parking lot for tailgating)
- Refill stations are located throughout the venue
- Recommended: insulated bottle to keep water cold through the show
🧥 Layers
Colorado mountain weather rule #1: it's never just one temperature. Even in July, nights at Red Rocks can drop into the 50s or lower. Bring:
- A hoodie or light jacket (even on "warm" days)
- A poncho or packable rain jacket
- Consider a lightweight fleece for fall shows
🧴 Sunscreen
Non-aerosol only (aerosol sunscreen is prohibited). The altitude means stronger UV exposure—you can burn in half the time you would at sea level, even during an evening show with lingering sun.
👟 Comfortable Shoes
Closed-toe with good grip. You'll walk from the parking lot, climb stairs, navigate bleachers, and potentially deal with wet surfaces. This isn't a suggestion—it's a necessity.
Food & Drink (Yes, You Can Bring Your Own)
Red Rocks is unusually generous about outside food and beverages. Here are the rules:
✅ Allowed:
- Food for personal consumption in a clear plastic bag (one gallon or less)
- Fruit and vegetables (must be pre-sliced)
- Plastic utensils only (no metal)
- Factory-sealed, non-alcoholic beverages in plastic containers (32 oz or less)
- Some shows may require you to remove lids upon entering
❌ Not allowed:
- Alcohol of any kind
- Glass bottles or aluminum cans
- Liquids in non-factory-sealed containers
- Metal utensils
Smart food ideas: Sandwiches, wraps, protein bars, trail mix, sliced fruit, cheese and crackers. Keep it simple, keep it in a clear bag, and you're golden.
Comfort Items
Blanket: Allowed up to 40" x 60". Must fit within your ticketed seating area and can't extend onto walkways. Great for sitting on (those benches are hard) or wrapping up during a cold encore.
Seat Cushion or Stadium Seat: Must be under 18" wide with no legs. After two hours on concrete bleachers, you'll be grateful.
Binoculars: Allowed and recommended for upper rows. The performers are visible from everywhere, but binoculars let you see expressions and details from row 40+.
Bags (Read This Carefully)
Red Rocks updated their bag policy—and it's strict:
✅ Allowed bags:
- Single-pocket bags or clear bags (max 13" x 15" x 8")
- Small purses and fanny packs (6" x 9" or smaller)
- Diaper bags and breast pumps
- Hydration packs (2L or smaller, emptied of liquid, no more than one pocket beyond the water reservoir)
- Soft-sided coolers, six-pack size (10" x 7" x 7" or smaller)
❌ Not allowed:
- Multi-pocket bags (backpacks, messenger bags with multiple compartments)
- Any bag larger than 13" x 15" x 8"
- Hard-sided coolers
There is no bag check at Red Rocks. If you arrive with a prohibited bag, you'll need to take it back to your car. This is the single most common entry issue at the venue.
Our recommendation: A clear tote bag or a simple fanny pack. You'll breeze through security and have room for your essentials.
Other Permitted Items
- Empty poster tubes
- Paper signs (8.5" x 11" max, no sticks or poles)
- Hand sanitizer (factory container, up to 3 oz, squeeze or pump only)
- Personal point-and-shoot cameras without removable lenses (unless the specific show prohibits them)
- Prescription medication (bring only what you need, in the original container with your name and dosage)
What You CANNOT Bring to Red Rocks
The prohibited list is extensive. Here are the items that most often surprise people:
The Obvious
- ❌ Weapons of any kind (guns, knives, pepper spray, mace, chains, studded/spiked jewelry)
- ❌ Illegal drugs and marijuana (yes, even in Colorado—Red Rocks is a City & County of Denver venue)
- ❌ Alcohol (no outside alcohol; available for purchase inside for 21+)
The "Wait, Really?"
- ❌ Umbrellas — They block views behind you. Bring a poncho instead.
- ❌ Gum — Yes, gum. They will confiscate it at the gate.
- ❌ Aerosol anything — No aerosol sunscreen, hairspray, or oxygen canisters. Bring lotion-style sunscreen.
- ❌ Selfie sticks — Not permitted inside the venue.
- ❌ Flow toys — Poi, hula hoops, flow stars, LED whips, kendamas—all prohibited.
- ❌ Stickers and confetti — Nothing that can be thrown or stuck to surfaces.
- ❌ Inflatables — Leave the beach balls at home.
- ❌ Laptops and tablets — No portable computers inside.
Photography & Recording
- ❌ Cameras with removable lenses
- ❌ GoPros, 360-degree cameras
- ❌ Professional audio or video recording equipment
- ❌ Tripods and monopods
- ❌ Drones (UAVs of any kind)
What IS allowed: Your phone camera (obviously) and small point-and-shoot cameras without removable lenses. Some shows may have additional photography restrictions—check your event details.
Other Prohibited Items
- ❌ Strollers
- ❌ Yoga mats and sleeping mats (except during Yoga on the Rocks events)
- ❌ Tarps
- ❌ Laser pointers
- ❌ Bullhorns and noisemakers
- ❌ Full face masks or helmets that obscure identity
- ❌ Totems (decorated sticks or poles)
- ❌ Glass bottles or objects of any kind
- ❌ Animals (except ADA-defined service animals; ESAs are not permitted)

Season-Specific Packing Adjustments
Spring Shows (April–May)
Add an extra warm layer. Spring evenings at 6,450 feet can drop into the 30s and 40s. Snow is possible in April. A beanie and gloves aren't overkill for early-season shows.
Summer Shows (June–August)
Sunscreen becomes critical—apply before you leave and reapply. Bring a hat for pre-sunset hours. Still bring a jacket; summer nights at altitude are cooler than you expect.
Fall Shows (September–October)
Dress like you would for a cool hike. Full jacket, warm layers, and possibly a blanket. October shows can feel like winter. Hot drinks from the concession stand become your best friend.
The Smartest Thing You Can Pack: A Plan for Getting Home
Here's the item that doesn't fit in any bag but might be the most important thing you bring to Red Rocks: a stress-free exit strategy.
After two to three hours of music, altitude, stairs, and (likely) a couple of drinks, the last thing you want to deal with is:
- Finding your car in a dark parking lot you've never been to before
- A 30–45 minute crawl to exit the park
- Navigating winding mountain roads back to Denver
- Surge-priced rideshare with a 40-minute wait
